Europe 19 Jun 14 Across Austria and into Italy

Day 14 -  Across Austria and the Alps. Today was a drive across the narrow bit of Austria and down into Italy across the Brenner Pass, stopping for lunch and possibly the night near Brenner. Things didn't quite work out that way. The first stop on crossing the border into Austria was to buy a vignette authorising us to use the motorway. Another European rip-off! Climbing up and over the mountains we encountered a problem in the Austrian Tyrol on the long, steep descent  (16%) of the Seefelder Strasse where we had to use so much brake that we suffered a bit of brake fade and the brakes had started to smell like burnt toast, so we, along with many others stopped to let things cool down a bit. 3.5 tonnes and a long, steep descent do not work well together. It was a bit of a nerve-wracking moment and made us a bit nervous on mountain excursions further on in the trip. Going over the Brenner pass we found the signposting to be pretty useless and so we missed our intended stop.

Smokin' Hot! 3.5 tonnes versus gravity

Totally fed up with Austria, we ploughed on and found a campsite (Campeggio Laghi di Lamar) in the mountains above Trentino. We pitched up, walked along to a lovely lake and had a stone baked pizza for dinner.
