On Sunday
5 Jun we left Kaysersberg and followed the Route de Vin to Thann. Being a Sunday there wasn't much going on, so we had a quick look around, weren't overly impressed, and continued along the stunningly pretty Route de la Mirabelle to a very soggy campsite just outside Besancon.

On Monday 6 Jun we caught the local tram into Besancon. We walked up to the Citadel, admiring the Cathedral on the way, and climbed and climbed until we reached Vauban's impressive fortifications. There is an awful lot to do here. As well as exploring the fortifications, there is an extensive zoo and a wonderful museum of artefacts from the 70's and 80's, which delighted us as we fondly remembered early VHS recorders, tape driven word processors, the Sony Walkman etc. Brilliant! Back into the city, we wandered around the shops, got brain freeze from a granite, pootled around the parks and were delighted by the statue commemorating the Lumiere Brothers first movie comedy moment.

Dominique also suggested that there were wonderful views to be had from the top of the ski lift at Metabief, so on the Wednesday we drove around the mountain to check it out, albeit the weather was not good. The ski resort was deserted but there were loads of "No Motorhome" signs, so feeling a bit unwelcome, we continued our drive around the mountain and suddenly found ourselves in Switzerland! We weren't expecting that, but seeing as we were here.....

It was a very pretty drive around Lake Geneva and we parked up for the night near Montreux. The natural scenery is stunning, but the buildings are pretty mundane. One thing we did notice was that Switzerland is bloody expensive! We didn't even buy a beer! In the morning I had an early morning stroll to see where the Rhone enters the Lake then, after breakfast, we drove alongside Lake Geneva and back into France, through Evian and down to Annecy. Lake Annecy is absolutely stunning. We wandered around the campsite area, admiring the scenery and the colour of the Lake before heading to bed.
On Fri
10 Jun we walked the not inconsiderable distance along the dedicated cycle/pedestrian walkway from the campsite into Annecy in glorious weather. Annecy is very pretty, but the midges can be annoying. We stopped for a gorgeous lunch of
tartiflette and duck with honey, followed by a ginormous banana split. On the way back we must have stopped at every bar for a beer. What a great day.
During the night there was a tremendous thunderstorm and the weather forecast remained unsettled so we decided to cut our losses and head south to find some decent weather. Accordingly, we hit the autoroute and quickly ate up the miles until we arrived in the Cevennes. Jura and Annecy are certainly areas we would like to explore further.
