No grape picking for us this year, but we decided to go to Cambridge anyway, firstly as Cambridge Rugby Club were at home on the Saturday and second as a "toe in the water" following a short convalescence after a throat operation.
As usual, in no time we were there and pitched and really just dossed around for the afternoon with just a short walk to the local garden centre for tea and cake and a mooch about. Unfortunately, as with all garden centres, they are gearing up to the most awful time of year - Cackmas! The cake was good though.
On Saturday it was a first major test of the new, improved throat with a scrumptious full English breakfast in the garden centre followed by a walk to the Rugby Club through Trumpington, Grantchester and into Cambridge. It was a gorgeous sunny day and a beautiful walk, so much nicer than the hike we have endured for the last 20 or so years in Twickenham. Our first outing to our new rugby club was great - the performance against Cornish Pasties not so good, but it was a great day out. We watched a bit of England v Chile in the world cup before walking back to the van.
After the long walk on Saturday we dossed about on Sunday, just having a short cycle to Waitrose to pick up some provisions.
On Monday we walked into Cambridge and visited the wonderful University Botanical Gardens before lunch in the Bath House (much cheaper than the more famous Eagle pub next door). Ice cream at Jack's Gelato (can't go to Cambridge without visiting Jack's), a quick mooch about and then a bus back in the rush hour.
Tuesday was up, pottered about and home in no time at all.
